Direct & Indirect ParasympathoMIMETICS Flashcards
1
Q
Bethanechol
A
- muscarinic agonist / activity at nicotinic receptors
- It stimulates contraction of the detrusor muscle causing bladder contraction. It is commonly used when there is spinal injury.
- Human approved
- PO
- will stimulate other smooth muscle (GI tract) and so should not be used if there is suspicion of GI obstruction.
- only be used if the urethra is patent
2
Q
Neostigmine
A
- cholinesterase inhibitors
- Injection
- Fast onset
- TX: rumen atony, stimulating intestinal motility in horses, and reversal of competitive neuromuscular blockers
- occasionally used to treat myasthenia gravis
3
Q
Pyridostigmine
A
- Same MoA as neostigmine but longer duration
- More commonly used to treat myasthenia gravis in small animals (dosed orally BID-TID)
4
Q
Edrophonium
A
- “Tensilon Test”
- A very short-acting (minutes) anticholinesterase.
- used in the diagnosis of myasthenia gravis and to differentiate between myasthenic crisis (caused by not enough ACh/receptor interactions) and cholinergic crisis (way too many ACh/receptor interactions).
