a one way relationship between an individual and someone famous eg celebrity
why are parasocial relationships formed?
allows an individual to achieve a fufillment in everyday life, adda sense of purposement and to escape reality

bowlbys theory of attachment
- psychologists used bolwbys theory of attachment to predict adults who didnt have a strong attachment woth the caregiver as a child will try to find an attachment substitute in adulthood
- they engage in parasocial relationships to try and fnd a substitute attachment
whats a weakness of parasocial relationships?
Mccutcheon
- Mccutcheon asked 229 studentd to complete the cas questionnaire and measure ther childhood attatchment style
- she found no relationship between the attachment type and forming pr’s with celebrities

- found that parasocial relationships may lead tombody image issues and a predisposition to eating disorders
- suggest that there is a relationship between attitudes to celebrities and body image causing low self esteem

- they found that insecure avoidant types become clingy and jealous in adulthood, making it difficult for them to have commited and lasting romantic relationships
