what is ducks breakdown model ?
the model suggests that the breakdown of relationship is not a single event, but a process that takes time, going through 4 separate phases
what occurs in the intra psychic stage
a person admits to themselves that they are dissatisfied with their relationship - spending a lot of time thinking of reasons for the dissatisfaction and possible ways forward
what happens in the dyadic stage
the person confronts their partner and voices their dissatisfaction with the relationship- there are a lot of complaints from the partner initiating the relationship
what happens in the social phase stage?
if at this point the dissatisfaction has been kept quiet, this phase involve friends and family that make it more public - as family intervene the relationship is harder to mend
what happens in the grave dressing stage
the physical breakup, both partners say their side of it usually minimising their faults and maximising their ex partners , showing themselves as loyal/ trustworthy to attract new partners
what is the resurrection phase
in 2006 duck proposed a new stage
at this stage people move past the pain and distress experienced within a breakup and experience personal growth
