  • Features

Echinococcus granulosus causing Cystic echinococcus aka Hydatid disease

  • Epi: worldwide where sheep live
  • Host: dogs &
  • Intermediate host: sheep w larval stage of parasite
  • Transmission: cyclozoonosis (adult tapeworm produces eggs)
  • Features: protoscloicies will develop into hyatid cyst; laminated membrane -> fertile cyst on US imaging: look like snowflakes in snowglobe when turn pt over
    • Secondary hydatid disease: in humans, if cysts spill in abdomen
  • Sx: lung, hepatomegaly, unilocular blindness, SOL in brain
  • Dx: US (Gold Standar), ELISA, X-ray, CT, MRI
  • Rx: Surgical (PAIR), albendazole
