Echinococcus granulosus causing Cystic echinococcus aka Hydatid disease
- Epi: worldwide where sheep live
- Host: dogs &
- Intermediate host: sheep w larval stage of parasite
- Transmission: cyclozoonosis (adult tapeworm produces eggs)
- Features: protoscloicies will develop into hyatid cyst; laminated membrane -> fertile cyst on US imaging: look like snowflakes in snowglobe when turn pt over
- Secondary hydatid disease: in humans, if cysts spill in abdomen
- Sx: lung, hepatomegaly, unilocular blindness, SOL in brain
- Dx: US (Gold Standar), ELISA, X-ray, CT, MRI
- Rx: Surgical (PAIR), albendazole
