What is Borrelia burgdorferi?
-Lyme disease
-host is ticks infected by white footed mouse and white tailed deer
Borrelia burgdorferi in animals?
-often no clinical signs
-fever, anorexia, lameness, swollen joints, organ failure, CNS damage
-rash, serology 1 month after bite
-antibiotics
-tick check, repellent
Borrelia burgdorferi in humans? 3 stages
1.) early, localized, flu like symptoms, bulls eye rash, appears 3 days to 1 month
2.) bacteria enter bloodstream, numb extremities, stick neck, facial paralysis, 2 weeks to 3 months after
3.) persistent infection, painful arthritis,meningitis, severe headaches, irregular heart rhythm, develops weeks to years
-rash, serology
-antibiotics
-no vaccine, insect repellent, tick check
What is Yersinia pestis?
-plague
- in animals an humans
-rats are carriers due to infected fleas
-clinical signs, fluid analysis
-antibiotics
-rodent and flea control
What is the bubonic plague?
-swollen, blackened lymph nodes, aches, exhaustion
-75% mortality if not treated
What is the pneumonic plague?
- lungs
-aerosolized; contagious from person to person
-90 % mortality if not treated
What is septicemic plague?
-Blackened skin
-usually fatal
What is toxoplasma gondii?
-toxoplasmosis
-feces, raw meat, inhalation of oocytes (litter box), transplacental
-animals rarely get sick
-biopsy, fluid analysis
-treatment not usually necessary
-eat cooked meat, good hygiene, keep litter boxes clean
What is giardia?
-two phases cysts and trophozoites
- cysts live in environment for months
-humans and almost all animals are carriers
-found in water dirt feces
- fecal to oral transmission
-direct smear, serology, rapid snap test
-treatment not always needed, antibiotics, disinfecting
-good hygiene, safe water, do not make out with puppies
What is sarcoptic mange?
-scabies
-lay eggs on skin that cause severe irritation, skin lesions, dramatic hair loss, severe itchiness
-skin scrape
-antiparisitic medication, revolution
What are 3 main types of worms?
-roundworms
-hookworms
-tapeworms
-GI upset
-dewormer
What are roundworms?
-toxocara canis and cati
-live and reproduce in intestines
-fecal oral
-see in fecal
-dewormer
What is Dipylidium caninum?
-tapeworms
-“rice” on feces/anus
-transmitted by animals ingesting fleas
What is Echinococcus spp?
-tapeworm
-cause cysts that may require surgical removal
-can take years to develop signs
What is Ancylostoma spp?
-hookworm
-attach to intestine wall and feed on hosts wall
-ingestion, skin penetration
