Parasites Flashcards

1
Q

Define protozoa. What do they largely infect?

A

Unicellular, eukaryotic microorganism that lack a cell wall and largely infect blood cells, intestinal, urogenital tissue and meninges.

Has cell membrane, numerous organelles, membrane bound nucleus, ER, food storage granules, and contractile and digestive vacuoles.

Q

What do infestations cause in the body?

A

Eosinophilia- abnormally large numbers of eosinophils in the blood

Eosinophils do not ingest the parasites but actually attach to the surface of the parasites via IgE and secrete cytotoxic enzymes contained within their eosinophilic granules.

17
Q

A

Blood flukes

Lung flukes

Intestinal/hepatic flutes

18
Q

A

Paragonimus sp.

P.westermani

20

A

Intestinal adult worms

Taenia sagniata

Taenia solium

A

tissue dwelling

human intestinal

zoonotic

22

Guinea worm Drunculus mediensis

23
Q

Name the human intestinal worms of nematodes. Which is the most common helminthic parasite of man?

A

hookworms

roundworm (ascaris)

strongyloides stercoralis (most common)

24
Q

What is trichomoniasis? What is it treated with? What is it known as?

A

A sexually transmitted siease of the vagina (women) or urethra (men) caused by flagellated protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis .

Tx: metronidazole

Known as one of the most common infections of the world.
