Paramecium Flashcards
Mode of nutrition of paramecium?
Holozoic
What is the common name for paramecium?
Slipper animalcule
Cilia arises from?
Kinetosome / Basal body
What is body covered with?
Cilia
Where is cilia longer at?
Posterior end (caudal tuft )
What is macro nucleus?
Macronucleus is one, large, kidney-shaped nucleus which controls vegetative functions (metabolism)
What is the micro nuclei count in P. caudatum and P. aurelia?
P. Caudatam = 1
P. Aurelia =2
During conjugation what happens to the 4 micro nuclei?
3 nuclei disintegrate
What is paramecium?
A paramecium is a unicellular eukaryotic organism that lives in warm freshwater environments. It is also a decomposer.
What is pellicle?
Pellicle is an elastic membrane that surrounds the cytoplasm of the organism. It is elastic in nature.
Functions of cilia?
Cilia enable the organism to move and can be used by the paramecium to collect food.
Are paramecia likely to live after its cilia is damaged?
Paramecia are less likely to survive when these cilia are damaged, as they are necessary for both locomotion and nutrition.
What does micronuclei contain?
Micronuclei contain the genetic material of the organism in the form of diploid chromosomes and therefore are involved in reproduction.
What are the functions of contractile vacuole?
These vacuoles are essential for water homeostasis in the paramecium by getting rid of extra water and osmoregulation
Where is cilia located?
On the edges of the pellicle are the cilia, or tiny hair-like structures
