Parallelism - TTP Flashcards

1
Q

What is the rule related to structure around FANBOYS

A

Structures built around coordinating conjunction FANBOYS must be parallel. Anytime we encounter one of these coordinating conjunctions, we must be vigilant in ensuring parallelism is properly maintained.

e.g.

In order to succeed at this company, team members must be empathetic and open-minded (Two adjectives after and before and)

Having walked miles almost daily for months, the trekkers were tired, but they would soon be home (Two IC after and before but)

Q

Is the below sentence correct or incorrect?

The dignitaries who had rushed to meet with the prime minister found themselves waiting in a hotel in the capital, for a surprisingly long period of time

A

The sentence is correct as usual reason being, even though it has used ‘for’, it is not used as a conjunction but as a preposition phrase, so items around it need not be in parallel

Q

List of items that should be parallel.

A

Items contained in a list are separated by commas and the sentence also uses conjunction, pay close attention to such cases, and all items in the list must be parallel to each other

People today routinely do things previously considered impractical or impossible

The sentence above has two elements in the list impractical and impossible, both of which are parallel.

Also, each of the elements of the list works logically with what introduces the list, “people today routinely do things previously considered”. Now, this rule holds true for all the cases i.e. whenever we have a list in the sentence it is introduced by few words which carry over to each item of the list.

Members post their comments, complaints, and suggestions on the appropriate message boards.

Here each element of the list is introduced by ‘Members post their’

Q

What is wrong with the below sentence?

Please leave a message including your name, your number, and explain why you called

A

As we know when a list of elements is present, each element is introduced by few words, in this sentence ‘Please leave a message including’ introduced all the elements of the list which works fine with the first and second element of the list but does not work with the last element.

Please leave a message including your name, your number, your reason for calling (The list works because each of the items goes well with the introduction)

Q

What are rules pertaining to the elements that carry over the list

A

The elements that carry over the list must be the same for every element of the list, if it does not work then there is some issue that needs to be fixed.

Also, if there is confusion about which element should carry over, you can try a couple of them and one of them should definitely work with the other

e.g,
Kelly is a good friend because she is smart, loyal, and keeps my secret

Now you can try carryover with she or she is , let’s see what we get from each

Try she
she is smart ; she loyal; she keeps my secret (the Second element doesn’t work)

Try she is
She is smart; she is loyal; she is keeps my secret (The third element doesn’t work)

Since none of the two work there is issue with the sentence

Q

What is wrong with the below sentence?

The barista made two double espressos, three caramel macchiatos, and he made a soy cappucccino

A

The list carry-over ‘barista made’ or ‘made’ does not work because of he in the third element

Q

What is wrong with the below sentence?

Because they prefer to travel by skateboard, bicycle, or, even, on foot, the country’s young people are not very interested in automobiles

A

We can carry either ‘travel by’ or ‘travel’ but none of them would work, so one way to fix is as below

Because they prefer to travel by skateboard, by bicycle, or, even, on foot, the country’s young people are not very interested in automobiles

Here carry over is ‘prefer to travel’

Q

What is wrong with the below sentence?

The members of the committee decided to reduce marketing expenditures, increase headcount significantly, and to change the schedule

A

The issue with the sentence is it partially repeats a carryover ‘to’ for some elements of list but not for all. It should either appear once before the first element of the list or with every element of the list

Q

Is the below sentence correct?

The groom was congratulated by his friends, his parents, and guests he was meeting for the first time

A

Here ‘his’ is not the carryover element, so it need not be repeated, the carryover is ‘groom was congratulated by’ and it perfectly carry overs to all the elements

Q

Observe the below sentence

Having scanned the tracks, the guide determined that the bison had come through the area approximately ten hours before, meandering around the watering hole before continuing on their way, they had numbered in the hundreds, though not more than 300, and that they had headed northwest

A

The word that is essential to what introduces the list, because ‘that’ is necessary for connecting ‘determined’ to what the guide determined. However, in the above version ‘that’ appears in only the first and last items in the list. Also, notice the sentence contains many modifiers, and ‘that’ need not be repeated in each one of those. The correct sentence would like below

Having scanned the tracks, the guide determined that the bison had come through the area approximately ten hours before, meandering around the watering hole before continuing on their way, that they had numbered in the hundreds, though not more than 300 hundred, and that they had headed northwest

Q

There is now a contradictory piece to what we have covered so far, so sometimes it makes sense to repeat the element in the list to convey a logical meaning

A
  1. For the expedition, we need bags for supplies, the cameras, and the laptops

The sentence written as above could mean below things

a. We need a bag for supplies and then it mentions other things in addition to bags we need, like a camera and laptop
b. We need a bag for supplies, and it is in the bag that we are planning to put the camera, laptop, etc.

Q

Observe the below sentence

Breck said that John will be the new class president and that Peter will be the new secretary

Breck said that John will be the new class president and Peter will be the new secretary

A

In the first sentence, since we have ‘that’ twice it means that it is Breck who said two things, while in second does not clarify if Breck himself said both the things

Q

What is wrong with the below sentence?

Caterina claims that workers in the other countries handle tasks that were once handled by local workers, and robots do too

A

Since we only have one ‘that’ in the sentence, it conveys the meaning that both Caterina and robots claimed about the same thing but that would be illogical, we are missing a ‘that’ from this sentence

Q

What is wrong with the below sentence?

The police chief was concerned by decreases in community support and the number of incidents involving negative interaction between citizen and officers

A

The sentence could be interpreted as conveying illogical meaning, that the police chief was concerned by the decrease in the number of incidents involving negative interaction between citizen and officers but that wouldn’t make sense, we can fix the sentence by repeating the ‘by’

The police chief was concerned by decreases in community support and by the number of incidents involving negative interaction between citizen and officers

Q

Few examples of nested list

A

Please leave your name and your number and explain why you called

The above sentence is a nested list as it contains two lists, see the structure below

Please
leave (your name and your number)
explain why you called

The first part now contains two more items which form a nested list

The managing partner instructed the traders to sell the financial stocks, purchase precious metal stocks and technology stocks, and determine the yield to maturity of ten-year government bonds

The managing partner instructed the traders to:
sell the financial stocks
purchase (precious metal stocks and technology
stocks)
determine the yield to maturity of ten-year
government bonds

The list contains three elements with the second items being a list itself

Q

How to fix parallelism issues by creating nested lists?

  1. Please leave your name, number, explain why you called
  2. Kelly is my best friend because she is smart, loyal, and keeps my secrets
A

We can fix the error in the sentence by creating a nested list as

Please leave your name and your number and explain why you called

Please
leave (your name and your number)
explain why you called

Now leave need not be carried over to the last element of the list. because that is a different list altogether as it is separated by another and

  1. Currently the sentence contains one list only with carry-over as (she is) but it does not work with the last element, we can fix the sentence in two ways, changing the last element so that it goes with carryover or converting the sentence into a nested list
    a. Kelly is my best friend because she is smart, loyal, and trustworthy
    b. Kelly is my best friend because she is smart and loyal, and keeps my secrets

Kelly
is my best friend because (she is) smart and loyal
keeps my secrets

Q

What are the most important correlative conjunctions

A
  1. Both … and
  2. Not only … but also..
  3. Not only … but … as well
  4. not .. but
  5. either … or
  6. neither .. not
18
Q

What is the issue with the below sentence?

  1. The chef not only prepares dinners but bakes also pastries
  2. People who solve world problems not only heal the world but they also heal themselves
A

Both the sentence break the correlative conjunctions hence are incorrect

19
Q

The rule for carryover in correlative conjunction

Whatever precedes the first part of a ‘not only .. but also’ structure carries over(without being explicitly written) to the second part of the structure, and thus need not be repeated

A

(Jim is) not only smart but also funny - [ correct ‘Jim is’ implicitly passes over to both smart and funny ]

However, writing above sentence like below would be wrong

Jim is not only smart but also Jim is funny [This would mean Jim is Jim is when first Jim is repeared]

Q

What is the correct answer choice for the below sentence?

Muhammad Ali, who was born Cassius Clay, is considered one of the greatest boxers and most well-known athletes in sports history, though his lasting fame can be attributed to not only his audacious style in the ring but also to his political activism, particularly by being a conscientious objector to the Vietnam war

a) one of the greatest boxers and most well-known athletes in sports history, though his lasting fame can be attributed to not only his audacious style in the ring but also to his political activism, particularly by being
b) as one of the greatest boxers and most well-known athletes in sports history, although his lasting fame can be attributed not only to his audacious style in the ring but also his political activism, particularly as
c) to be one of the greatest boxers and most well-known athletes in sports history, though his lasting fame can be attributed to not only his audacious style in the ring but his political activism as well, particularly by being
d) one of the greatest boxers and most well-known athletes in sports history, though his lasting fame can be attributed to not only his audacious style in the ring but also his political activism particularly as
e) to be one of the greatest boxers and most well-known athletes in sports history, although his lasting fame can be attributed not only to his audacious style in the ring but also to political activism, particularly

A

a) wrong because the list introducer (attributed to) does not work with part of the sentence that comes after ‘but also’ (because of double ‘to’)
b) wrong because the list introducer (attributed) does not work with part of the sentence that comes after ‘but also’ (his political )
c) The issue with this option is not with the sentence construction because ‘not only … but .. as well’ is acceptable sentence construction, the issue with the sentence is because of the participle phrase ‘particularly by being’, given this appears at the end of the sentence, it is modifying the action performed by subject i.e. fame, that would render the sentence illogical as fame can’t be a conscientious objector to the Vietnam war
d) Correct option
e) Whose political activism, yours or mine or his?

21
Q

What is wrong with the below sentence?

Each day Sam is charged with either mopping the floors or he must take out the trash

A

The sentence contains correlative conjunction ‘either..or’
now one thing to keep in mind as we saw with the correlative conjunction ‘not only.. but also’ the word phrases which precedes the first part of the conjunction would carryover i.e.

Each day (Sam is charged with) either mopping the floors or he must take out the trash

The above would now be expanded as
Each day Sam is charged with either mopping the floors or Sam is charged he must take out the trash

The second part of the sentence now does not make any sense the correct version of the sentence would be as follow

Each day, Sam is charged with either mopping the floors or taking out the trash

22
Q

Observe the below sentence

The record low temperatures, wind chills, and snowfalls caused by the polar vortex that primarily affected the Midwestern United States and Eastern Canada resulted in not only service interruptions for airlines, post offices, and natural gas providers but widespread school and business closures as well.

A

Notice in this sentence, the ‘not only’ should result in you to look for the ‘but also’ part of the correlative structure, the reason for mentioning this e.g. was to highlight that the construction

‘Not only.. but… as well’ is also a valid construction of the sentence

23
Q

What are few other structures for parallelism?

A
  1. X rather than Y
  2. Mistake X for Y
  3. Prefer X to Y
  4. Range from X to Y
  5. More X than Y

Greg prefers cooking a meal for his family at home to eating in a crowded restaurant

24
Q

What is wrong with the below sentence?

The team traveled by rail rather than flying to the tournament

A

X rather than Y should trigger parallelism thoughts. now given traveled is in the simple past tense, while flying to the tournament is participle phrase, the sentence is not parallel.

the correct sentence would be
The team traveled by rail rather than flew to the tournament

25
Q

Observe the below sentence

  1. Having hit her GMAT target, Aisha applied to her first-choice business school, was invited for an interview, and was accepted
  2. The ecologist said that genetically modified fish had found their way into the lake, had grown quickly, and were eating the other fish
A
  1. Even though I didn’t know the sentence contained verbs in a different voice, the sentence is still parallel reason being the list introducer ‘Aisha’ goes on with every object of the list. So, it does not matter if verbs are in different voice as long as they are logical and convey clear meaning
  2. Second sentence the list introducer ‘genetically modified fish’ works seamlessly with every part of the list, so even though the verbs of the sentence are in the different tense form the sentence is parallel and correct
26
Q

Observe the below two sentences

  1. Glass is relatively hard, diamond is harder than glass, and ionsdaleite is the hardest naturally occurring substance known
  2. Glass is relatively hard, diamond is harder than glass, and the hardest naturally occurring substance known is ionsdaleite
  3. Rome is one of the few cities in the world where a great number of well preserved ancient structures can be found and that has many examples of stunning Renaissance architecture
  4. Rome is one of the few cities in the world where a great number of well preserved ancient structures can be found and where there are many examples of stunning Renaissance architecture
A

Both of the two sentences are parallel and convey exactly the same meaning. whenever you come across such a situation b/w option choices select the answer choice which is more parallel, with these two sets notice in the second sentence the third clause is inverted but in the first sentence, it is not, so the first sentence is somewhat more parallel than the second, so we would go with it, having said that it doesnot make the second sentence incorrect, it is just first one is more parallel

In the second set of examples, both the sentences are paralell and convey exactly the same meaning. but we might select option 2 as the anwer because it is more parallel than first
