Q

In 1914 how many people were there of how many societies affiliated to the NUWSS? What gain did these societies have?

What does this gain show?

A

in 1914 there were 50,000 people of 500 societies affiliated to the NUWSS who had gained cross-party support, elements within the Liberals and the Conservatives, although only the Labour Party fully supported their cause.

This support was gained after the formation of the WSPU in 1903, which clearly shows that the NUWSS was still a respected and powerful organisation and not just the group women joined because it was the ‘only option’ before the formation of the WSPU.

Q

What does Angela Holdsworth quote show?

A

This [Angela’s quote] means that when the NUWSS was first formed the group was made up of women who were of a higher class and had privilege that they could use to their advantage when fighting for women’s suffrage.

Q

What could be argued about WSPU being the more remembered group?

A

While the WSPU is the more remembered group,** it could definitely be argued that they are only more remembered due to their militancy and not due to their size or progression** which is highlighted in the fact that the NUWSS had a copious amount of members more than the NUWSS.

Q

Why the was NUWSS an appealing organisation to join?

A

It is apparent that the NUWSS was an appealing organisation for women to join,** many women found the WSPU’s militancy to be too violent, and found a safe space in the NUWSS, where they could still contribute to the fight for women’s suffrage but in a way that was more peaceful.**

Q

What is debated about the NUWSS peaceful campaign?
(2 points)

A

However, it is debated the effectiveness of the NUWSS peaceful campaigning of starting petitions, street-speaking and parades.** This is due to the fact that many claim the NUWSS’ campaigning was simply too easy for politicians to ignore, **due to the lack of noise it made.

Furthermore, the NUWSS also did not argue for universal franchise, which was a major flaw in their tactics. By not fighting for universal franchise they therefore missed out on the support of many men who were also wanting the vote - men such as those who didn’t own or rent property or were on poor relief.

Q

Despite the bill failing to become a law…

finish the sentence

A

…it is more important to note that the number of MPs supporting the bill was very high and the fact that the bill even made it to parliament highly shows that the suffragists were making progress in grabbing government’s attention
