Paragraph five - example of other countries Flashcards
What countries gave women the vote before Britain and when?
New Zealand (1893) and Finland (1906)
What did the example of other countries show?
It provided strong evidence that women could take part in politics without any negative impact on the country. When these other countries began allowing women to vote, Britain saw this and took after their lead and could clearly see that women were not damaging the politics in other countries. Furthermore, British politicians wanted to be seen as the head of the greatest democracy in the world and wanted to remain on top of the next great reform in politics.
How did Russia and Germany achieve women enfranchisement?
Through a revolution
Why is example of other countries not a valid factor?
the suffragists were the most important factor as the NUWSS used peaceful tactics, clearly showing that Germany and Russia’s example was not an important factor as their enfranchisement of women was following a revolution with violent tactics.
