Para 3 Flashcards
What is the point?
In terms of custodial sentencing, prisons have the four main aims of punishment, deterrence, rehabilitation and protection.
How can this be expanded?
Custodial attempts to rehabilitate often through education and work programmes at the same time as keeping the public safe. In prisons the courses are usually available to help prisoners gain new skills. This is due to the common proven link of illiteracy, innumeracy and offending.
What is an example of this?
According to Civitas, 52% of male offenders and 71% of female offenders have no qualifications. A prisoner may also get the chance to learn new life skills such as woodwork and engineering.
What is the analysis of this?
This has the aim to allow offenders to gain qualifications and skills that will benefit them in finding employment after release.
What is a following example?
Research shows that prisoners who gain employment after release are far less likely to offend. In 2018 the Ministry of Justice found that people who engaged in education programmes during sentencing were 7.5% less likely to reoffend within the first year.
what is the analysis of this?
This clearly shows the beneficial impact of prisoners receiving some form of education towards rehabilitation during their custodial sentence.
What is a similar example to this?
Similarly to this, according to Brookings in America, offenders who enrol in education during sentencing are 48% less likely to reoffend. Additionally, estimation suggests for every $1 spent on education during sentencing, $4-$5 are saved on reoffending.
What point can furthermore be made?
Furthermore, custodial sentences also protect the public as it ensures that these individuals are unable to commit any further crimes. Additionally, custodial sentences provide a sense of justices for the victims.
what is a mini conclusion?
Overall, custodial sentences do have several benefits for the rehabilitation of offenders through the use of different programmes. However, it brings the argument of whether these individuals even deserve this chance of education after committing these crimes?
