This highlights that many younger offenders may refuse to complete their non-custodial sentence and therefore don’t receive any rehabilitation. This further backs up the argument these sentences are ‘too soft’.

As well as this fines have disadvantages. Fines may be payed by the offenders family or friends therefore lessens the impact for the offender. The fine may also not get payed at all.

These findings show that many offenders refuse to pay fines as they dont see them as proper punishments.

However, according to analysis by The Independent, more than 10,000 criminals serving non-custodial sentences are likely to be suffering undetected mental health issues. This can lead to the risk of self harm and suicide.

This indicates that many of those receiving non-custodial sentences are not receiving the full support they require.

Overall, it is transparent that non-custodial sentences are not always fully effective or the right decision. However, non-custodial do have many benefits that can’t be overlooked, highlighting the overall effectiveness.
