Both custodial and non-custodial sentences can be extremely effective when dealing with crime, but in different ways.
How can custodial sentences be discussed?
For certain, more serious crimes, custodial sentences may be the most appropriate when the offence is so consequential, a non-custodial sentence cant be justified.
How can non-custodial sentences be discussed?
However, for other crimes, a non-custodial sentence may be deemed more appropriate and supportive.
what is a custodial sentence?
A custodial sentence is a judicial sentence which imprisons people for time set by the court. Prisons have the four main aims of rehabilitation, deterrence, protection and punishment.
what is a non-custodial sentence?
Non-custodial sentences are an alternative to prisons given for less serious crimes such as theft and antisocial behaviour. These non-custodial sentences can come in the form of fines, community pay back orders (CPOs) and drug treatment testing orders (DTTOS) as well as others.
What do both have?
Both custodial and non-custodial sentences have strong and valid arguments to being effective.
How is non-custodial evidently already more effective?
Whereas, non-custodial sentences are more effective for less serious crimes and preventing overcrowding in prisons. Overcrowding can lead to the need for more non-custodial sentences to be issued
