Paper chromatography Flashcards
Formula for Rf value
Distance travelled by substance
/
Distance travelled by solvent
What is the rf value?
The ratio between the distance travelled by dissolved substances(solute) and the distance travelled by the solvent
What is paper chromotography?
A separation technique that is used to separate mixtures of soluble substances
What are the two phases in chromotography?
Mobile and stationary phase
What is the mobile phase?
The paper carrying the different substances with it
Moves through the stationary phase
What is the stationary phase?
The absorbent paper
What do impure susbtances produce in chromotography?
Two or more spots as they contain multiple substances
What is step 1 of paper chromatography?
Using a ruler, measure 1cm from the bottom of the chromatography paper and mark with a dot using a oencil
What is step 2 of paper chromatography?
Using a pipette, drop small spots of each of the pinks onto the pencil line
What is step 3 of paper chromatography?
Pour a suitable solvent into the bottom of a container such as a beaker. the solvent should just touch the chromatography paper
What is step 4 of paper chromatography?
Place thge chromatography paper into the container and allow the solvent to move up through the paper
What is step 5 of paper chromatography?
Just before the solvent line reaches the top of the paper, remove the chromatogram from the container and allow to dry
What is step 6 of paper chromatography?
Once the chromatogram has dried, measure the distance travelled by the solvent
What is step 7 of paper chromatography?
Measure the distance travelled by each ink spot
What is step 8 of paper chromatography?
Calculate the rf value
