Factors affecting the rate of reaction Flashcards
What does the rate of reaction depend on
Temperature
Concentration of a solution or the pressure of a gas
Surface area
The presence of a catalyst
Why does increasing the temp increase the rate of reaction
As temperature increases, kinetic energy of particles increases, more energetic collisions
The faster they move the more frequent the collisions
However not directly proportional to each other
Why does increasing the concentration increase the rate of reaction
Conc increases=Faster reactions
more reactions=More frequent collisions
There are more particles knocking about in the same volume of water
What effect does increasing the surface area have on on rate of reaction
Increasing the surface area of solid reactants increases the frequency of collisions and so increases the rate if reaction
Why does Using a catalyst increase rate of reaction
Catalysts offer a different pathway for the reaction which decreases the activation energy needed for the reaction to occur.
Why does increasing the pressure increase the rate of reaction
The same number of particles occupies a smaller space which makes collisions between them more frequent
