paper chromatography Flashcards
what does paper chromatography allow us to do?
it allows us to separate substances based on their different solubilities
what is a solvent
a liquid that dissolves substances
what does a pure chemical produce in chromatography
it will produce a single spot on the paper in all solvents
why is the starting line/base line drawn in pencil
if it was in pen, the pen ink would move up the paper with the solvent
how is chromatography done
1) get filter paper and draw base line in pencil
2) place dot of ink on base line
3) get beaker with solvent in it, place filter paper making sure base line is not submerged
4)wait for solvent to seep up the filter paper
5)dyes in ink dissolves in the solvent and moves up paper with the solvent
once solvent has nearly reached top of paper, take it out and leave it to dry, the pattern left on the paper is called the chromatogram
what is the mobile phase?
a substance that molecules can move in
is usually a liquid or gas
what is the stationary phase?
substance or material that molecules cant move in
solid, thick liquid, paper
the equation for the Rf value
distance travelled by the solvent
