covalent bonding (small covalent molecules) Flashcards
what is a covalent bond?
a covalent bond is formed when a a pair of electrons is shared between two non metals
the attributes of small covalent molecules
have low melting and boiling points
are usually liquid or gas at room temp
the atoms in each molecule are held together by
strong covalent bonds
what is an intermolecular force
they are VERY WEAK forces in-between molecules (not atoms)
intermolecular - between forces
as the intermolecular forces between the molecules are weak,
it does not take much energy to break them.
The bigger the covalent molecule, the stronger the
intermolecular forces are, and so it requires more energy to break
small covalent molecules do not conduct electricity —>
as the molecules do not have an overall electric charge (no free electrons or ions)
