Paper 2 The UK’s Evolving Physical Landscape Flashcards
Concordant Coastlines
Strata arranged parallel to the coast
Lulworth cove- small entrance through hard rock strata into eroded cove with steep sides along the hard rock strata
Discordant Coastlines
Strata arranged perpendicular to the coastline
South West Ireland - Soft rock strata eroded quicker than the hard rock strata headlands of hard rock are formed between bays if soft rock
Spit
Formed by longshore drift when sand is carried in front of mouth of the river
Spit grows until the erosion of the river is matched by the deposition by long shore drift
Can curve around when wave direction changes, making a hook
Salt marshes can form behind the spit
Bar
Longshore drift carries sand and sediment in front of a bay
Behind the bar, a shallow lagoon forms
Summer constructive waves
Winter destructive waves
Coastal erosion processes
Hydraulic action
Abrasion
Attrition
