Population Density
The average number of people in a given area expressed as people per km²
Higher population density in urban areas than rural areas due to higher salaries, more jobs and better services in urban areas
UK’s rural periphery
Allerdale is an area in the Lake district in the rural periphery:
Lower population density - small towns, villages, and isolated farms
older populations - popular place for retirement
lower income - farming + tourism low paying
high transport costs - no public transport, far away from cities
out migration of young people - few opportunities for university and employment
Urban and rural development gap
Rural areas unnatractive for business as there are few employees and customers. UK and EU government
