Q

What factors affect water availability

A
  • rainfall, areas of water surplus have high rainfall, but low rainfall isn’t the only reason people don’t have water
  • geology, permeable rock layers are able to store water for years
  • over-abstraction, abstraction = taking water from rivers and groundwater, over-abstraction happens when too much water is taken
  • pollution of supply, rivers and groundwater can become polluted by industry
  • poverty, people in LICs or NEEs usually choose between expensive water or unsafe water
  • limited infrastructure, when there hasn’t been enough investment into pipes and pumping stations
