Paper 2 - Section C, Resource Management Flashcards
Suggest one reason why undernourishment is unevenly distributed globally
The most undernourished countries are also the lowest income countries. People are too poor to reliably get enough food
Why are many LICs have a water deficit
Because there is low rainfall and high temps which leads to high rates of evaporation
What is the main source global energy
Oil
What percent does the Uk import food products each year
46%
What are food miles
Food miles measure the distance food travels from being produced to the consumer
Why will eating food locally sourced reduce the carbon emissions of food production
If people buy locally produced foods, it will reduce the distance food is transported, reducing the food miles
What are causes of water pollution in the Uk
- Farmland runoff - fertilisers and pesticides
- During storm events, untreated sewage sometimes has to be flushed into rivers
- Runoff from roads and motorways, including salt used for gritting in the winter
How does the Uk manage its water quality
- strict laws which set out limits of water pollution and punishments for those that break them
- laws control how much water is taken from rivers and groundwater
- efficient treatment plants process sewage and recycle safe water back into rivers
What are two problems with large-scale water transfer schemes
- Water is very heavy to transport, it needs to be pumped uphill and pumping uses a lot of energy=increase in carbon emissions
- Easiest way to transfer water is to link rivers but the rivers could have different water chemistries so it could damage the wildlife in either river
How is the UK’s energy mix changing
The country relies heavily on fossil fuels to generate electricity but the reliance is decreasing
What factors have meant the UK’s energy mix is changing
- became cheaper to use coal from other countries + Uk coal mines shut
- oil and gas reserves in North Sea have begun to run out
- other countries supplying the Uk with energy are not always politically stable
What are the environmental risks of fracking
- involves pumping water and chemicals into the shale bedrock which contaminates groundwater
- Shale gas is a fossil fuel so using it for energy production would not reduce carbon emissions
