what is pathetic fallacy
when the writer uses language to reflect the weather, for example “I was as glum as the grey clouds outside my window this morning”
what is hyperbole
hyperbole is a figure of speech to describe something, but the example is not literally true. for example “there’s enough food in here to feed an entire army”
what is dysphemism
dysphemism is usually a derogatory term, for example calling a cigarette a cancer stick instead of its actual name
what is personification
personification is giving an animate object human traits, for example “as I stared at my Rosie cheeked sex doll”
what is euphemism
euphemism is to positively say something (so the opposite of dysphemism), for example instead of telling someone they are fired you would say “we are letting you go”
what is a simile
a simile is using “like” or “as”
what is a pun
a play on words
what does connotation mean
connotation is when there are positive and negative meanings for words, for example the word “red” connotations of this word are death and sex and love
what does denotations mean
that there is not other meaning than the literal one
what is neologism
neologism is new words that have been added into th English dictionary
what does semantic field mean
semantic field is when a plethora of words are used to describe something, for example words like water or sea or fish or waves is the semantic field of the ocean
