PAPER 1 - respiratory system Flashcards
What is the structure of the respiratory system?
Nasal cavity
Mouth
Trachea
Alveoli
Bronchiole
Bronchus
Diaphragm
Lung
Composition of air we breathe:
IN - 21% oxygen, 0.03% carbon dioxide
OUT - 16% oxygen, 4% carbon dioxide
What is diffusion?
The movement of gas from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
Functions of the CV system
- Transport of oxygen + carbon dioxide
- Transport nutrients
- Clotting on wounds
- Regulation of body temperature
Aerobic Respiration:
glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water + energy
Anaerobic Respiration:
glucose -> lactic acid + energy
vital capacity definition
maximum amount of air that can be breathed out after breathing in as much air as possible
tidal volume
amount of air breathed in with each normal breath
total lung capacity
total amount of air that the lungs can hold after the biggest possible breath in.
what happens to the rates of breathing during exercise?
tidal volume increases as depth of breathing increases and the rate of breathing increases too.
