What does question 1 asses?
A
- AO1
- pick out and understand pieces of explicit and implicit infromation from the text
- collect and put together information from different texts

What do you need to do for question 1?
A
- list facts
- in quotes
- or in your own words
- no need to write anything else about them
- 4 marks - one mark for each fact

What are the common mistakes in question 1?
A
- not choosing points from the lines referenced
- don’t choose points that answer the question

What does question 2 asses?
A
- language part of AO2
- explain how the writer uses language (and structure) to acheive their purpose and influence readers
- use technical terms to support your analysis of language (and structure)

What do you need to do for question that ask ‘how’?
A
- focus on methods the writer has used
- and their effect on the reader

What does it mean by language analysis?
A
analysing:
- sentance forms
- language features
- use of words
(make sure you include all of these in your answer, i.e. include everyhthing that is bulleted)

What needs to be done to acheive full marks in q2?
A
- answers need to be perceptive
- perceptive is thinking beyond the obvious
- need to avoid writing about vague, generalised effects (that could be applied to any text) by making your comments specific to the text you are reading

How do you avoid generalised comments?
A
- think about: what is the desirect effect the writer is aiming to acheive in this extract
- could be boredem, energy, danger, humour etc.
- then look at language used to acheive this effects
- use language devices for this

How is the analysis developed?
A
- it is not enough to simple identify the language devices
- you must explain the effect on the reader
- think ‘why did the writer use that device? Does it make me feel a certain way / feel a certain thing / emphasise a certain point’
- apply to context of the extract
