Accepted form of behaviour, most ppl in society follow
‘social glue’ - relative
e.g. line in the queue, driving on left, holding the door for ppl
Values
General principles or beliefs, most society agrees on
- culturally relative –> time, place and context
e.g. respect, fairness and sanctity of life
Status
Position in society/ social group. part of identity, affects relationships
Ascribed –> fixed/ hard to change e.g. race/age (royalty)
Achieved –> earned with effort, changeable over time
Roles
Routines/responsibilities in everyday life
- Role conflict –>work and personal life conflict (fam and job)
Culture
Learned & shared way of life. passed thru generations
- relative - traditions, clothes, language
High culture (Strinati and Maclntosh & Mooney )
e.g. ballet, opra/theatre, polo sports
Strinati –> media creates pop culture, masses getting access to
high culture
Maclntosh & Mooney –> u/c, system of social closure, power to
isolate from classes below
Popular culture (Bourdieu and Adorno)
Shallow access to masses no education/ knowledge needed
Bourdieu –> pop/high culture created by those in power
Adorno –> pop culture distracts us from social/political issues
- prevents a revolution
Multiculturism/ cultural diversity
Ethnic, class, regional, sexuality and political
Consumer culture
pop/global culture express identity
Exploited for profits (Marxists) - wide range/ alluring packaging
Global culture (Ritzer - Americanisation)
Ritzer - global culture is just American culture
