Q

Explain the coding research for the sensory register ?

A

CROWDER 1993- information is only retained in iconic store for milliseconds

In the echo if for two to three seconds

SUPPORTS: idea that we code information in different stores and for different durations of time

Q

Explain research for capacity in the sensory register

A

SPERLING 1960- used a tachistoscope

Flashed 3 x4 array of letters onto decree for 1/20th of a seconds

Sounds were in different tones to indicate which line to recall - High medium and low

Recall was high which supports the capacity of the SR being large

Q

Evaluate the capita of the SR

A

It involves experiments

Experiments only provide an estimate

The lack in mundane realise

Lack in ecological validity

16
Q

What is said to be the duration of the Sensory register ?

A

To have a limited duration

Each type of store decays at different rates

Other evidence suggests that duration decreases with age

17
Q

Explain the research for the duration of the SR?

A

WALSH AND THOMPSON 1978-
Found that the iconic store has a duration of 500 milliseconds
Decreases as you get older
Duration of the sensory memories is limited and dependent on age

TREISMAN 1964- played identical auditory information into both ears of ppts with a delay between each
Ppts noticed info was same if delay of 2 seconds or less

Suggests that the echoing store therefore had a duration of 2 seconds

18
Q

Evaluate the duration of the sensory register

A

Breuer duration of sensory memories due to engrams fading quickly

Biological basis

Evolutionary- only need to focus on perceptual information with an immediate survival value

19
Q

What is the short term memory ?

A

It receives information from the SR

It’s an active change in memory

Contains information currently being thought about
