Paper 1 Extra Flashcards
What happens at the cathode?
Metal will be produced if it is less reactive than hydrogen.
What happens at the anode?
Oxygen is produced unless halide ions are present.
Are nitrates insoluble?
No.
What are sodium, potassium and ammonium salts?
Soluble.
What are chlorides?
Mostly soluble apart from silver and lead.
What are Sulfates?
Mostly soluble apart from lead, barium and calcium.
What are carbonates?
Mostly insoluble apart from sodium, potassium and ammonium.
What are hydroxides?
Mostly insoluble apart from sodium potassium and ammonium.
If they ask you about the test for something remember you could electrolyse it to produce the pure suspbstance and then test for it.
Okay.
What makes things crystalline?
Regular giant lattice.
How are nitrogen and oxygen obtained from the air?
Fractional distillation.
Why does oxygen have a low boiling point?
Weak forces of traction between the oxygen MOLECULES.
Why might the theoretical yield not be met?
Other side reactions may occur, product/reactant lost or reaction may not be complete.
Why might manufacturers find a use for the waste products?
To save money/improve profit or the waste product may be harmful to the environment and causes pollution so they would want to stop this.
Why might there be an anomalous piece of data when reaction magnesium oxide?
Not all magnesium reacted as not enough oxygen.
