Compliance
Compliance is conforming to gain approval. They only express these views in public but NOT privately.
Identification
Identification is where an individual adopts an attitude or behaviour because they want to be associated with the group
E.g. a child may start smoking because ‘that’s what the cool kids do’ and they want to be seen as the ‘cool kid’
- Has both elements of compliance and internalisation
Internalisation
Internalisation is where the individual conforms because of an acceptance of their views leading to acceptance both publicly and privately.
Normative social influence
A type of conformity based on desire of approval.
Informative social influence
An example of internalisation where individuals conforms because they believe they are right.
Often occurs when there is an expert present or in ambiguous situations
what are the 3 variable affecting conformity
1) Group size
2) Unanimity of majority
3) Task difficulty
