What is the idea of self-disclosure?
The revealing of personal information about oneself to another is crucial to develop a closer, more intimate romantic relationship
What do romantic relationships first require?
Attraction- to have a liking or desire for a particular person
What is the concept of self-disclosure?
We reveal more personal information to people we like and in turn we like people who reveal personal information about themselves to us
When do we usually self-disclose?
When there is sufficient trust so that individuals are certain such information won’t be revealed to others as source of embarrassment
What did Altman & Taylor (1973) study & find?
- Studied: Disclosing in initial stages of a relationship
- Self-disclosure is inappropriate at first initial encounter and does not enhance attraction as it makes them maladjusted and less likeable
What did Kleinke (1979) study & find?
- Studied: Selective disclosure
- Found those who were selective about who they disclosed to were seen as more attractive as recipients of the info felt specially chosen supporting idea that attribution for disclosure is important factor in self-disclosure

Appropriateness of the disclosure
Sometimes disclosing personal information is inappropriate and can be seen as ‘over-the-top’. E.g. doing so in a first date can make individual look like they lack social skills
