AO3 Flashcards
AO3: Social support in S.I
(+) Research demonstrates the importance of social support in resisting social influence.
Rees and Wallace: Showed that social support provided by friends helped adolescents resist conformity pressures from majority
(-) Even in Milgram and Asch variations with social support some participants still obey (10%) and conform (5.5% conformity rate). Suggesting that there may be dispositional factors e.g. LOC or authoritarian personality
AO3: Locus of control
(+) Research support Avtgis (1998) Carried out a meta-analysis of relationship between LOC+ different forms of S.I including conformity.
Showed a positive correlation for relationship between scores of internality/externality and scores on measures of persuasion, S.I and conformity.
Analysis showed: Those who scored higher on external LOC= easily persuaded, more influenced than those who scored as internal.
(-) Relationship between LOC+ resistance to S.I is correlational.
Other factors such as social status, social anxiety may be involved.
