Pancreatic Glands Flashcards
Types of pancreatic glands
- exocrine
- endocrine
Pancreatic endocrine hormones
-function relate to glucose levels
-secreted from pancreatic islets (islets of Langerhans), antagonistic
> alpha cells secrete glucagon
> beta cells secrete insulin
Glucagon
- increase blood glucose levels
- targets liver cells, by promoting glycogen breakdown, gluconeogenesis, glucose release
- secreted by low glucose level trigger (and SNS activity, ex) fight or flight situation))
Insulin
-decreases blood glucose levels
> promotes glucose uptake, glycosis, glycogen synthesis
> inhibits glycogen breakdown, gluconeogenesis
> stimulated by high glucose levels (inhibited by the SNS)
Diabetes
-lack in insulin activity (Type I, type II)
-symptoms:
> polyuria (frequent urination)
> polydispia (frequent thirst)
> polyphagia (frequent hunger)
Type I diabetes
- insulin not being produced
- autoimmune disease
Type II diabetes
- cells no longer sensitive to insulin
- change in receptors, it no longer is able of taking up glucose
