palpation Flashcards
Describe palpitation
the process whereby the examiner uses the hands to feel for body movement, lumps, masses, and skin characteristics
Internal vibration sensed on the body surface with the flat of the hand
Fremitus
Movement felt as air moves through secretions
Tactile fremitus
How to preform a vocal fremitus
ask the patient to repeat the words “ninety nine” while you palpate over the chest in a systematic manner
What does it mean if you feel more vibration during vocal fremitus
higher chance with pneumonia and atelectasis
What does it mean if you feel little vibration during vocal fremitus
higher chance with emphysema and pnemumothorax
Grating or popping sound or sensation that is felt under the skin
Crepitus
Trapped air bubbles
subcutaneous emphysema
Crepitus is often a sign of a
pneumothorax (air in the pleural space)
What may be present if one side of thorax under expands
atelectasis, pneumonia, or a lung tumor
what might it mean if the thorax expands poorly
emphysema
decreased tactile fremitus is caused by ___ which is what 5 lung conditions
Hyperinflation
1. COPD
2. Asthma,
3. airway obstruction
4. Emphysema
5. Pneumothorax
Increased tactile fremitus is caused by ___ and 3 lung conditiond
Increased Lung density
1. Pneumonia
2. atelectasis
3. Lung tumor
