exam breathing patterns Flashcards
complete absence of spontaneous breathing
Apnea
Normal spontaneous breathjing
Eupnea
Short, rapid breathing followed by 10-30 second periods of apnea
Biots breathing
Increased depth of breathing
Hyperpnea
Not a breathing pattern increased alveolar ventilation that causes a decrease in PaC02
Hyperventilation
Not a breathing pattern Decreased alveolar ventilation that causes an increase in PaCO2
hypoventilation
Increased respiratory rate
Tachypnea
Decreased respiratory rate
Bradypnea
10-30 seconds of apnea followed by gradual increase in rate and depth, followed by decreasing rate and depth ending in apneic period
Cheyen Strokes Breathing
Increased depth and rate of breathing for sustained period of time (associated with Ketoacidosis.
Kussmauls breathing
Individual can breathe most comfortably only in an upright position
Orthopnea
Individual can breath most comfortably only in a laying position
Platypnia
Not a breathing patterm Shortness of breath of which the patient is aware
Dyspnea
Chest contracts during inspiration and expands during expiration (Neurologic, electrolyte imbalance, upper airway obstruction)
Paradoxical chest wall breathing
Inward movement of the lower rib cage during inspiration (associated with barrel chest on COPD)
Hoovers sign
