PALPA model Flashcards
What does PALPA stand for?
Psycholinguistic Assessment of Language Processing in Aphasia
What does the model apply?
It applies a psycholinguistic approach to the assessment of language processes.
What is PALPA based on the assumption of?
It’s based on the assumption that the language system is organised as separate modules of processing, these can be impaired selectively by the brain.
Name the 4 modules assessed
Visual Recognition
Conceptual Semantic System
Phonological Output Lexicon
Motor speech processes
Visual recognition.
This stage is processing the visual information- it’s how the object or picture is recognised.
Consider visual acuity- glasses?
Consider visual field e.g. hemianopia?
Consider visual-perception impairment e.g. visual agnosia
What is visual agnosia?
can’t recognise object- would mistake it with something visually similar.
Whereas aphasia- demonstrate recognition e.g. you can drink from it, wrong response linked semantically of phonologically, or jargon.
Conceptual semantic system.
A semantic output is accessed from the relevant conceptual elements e.g. what does it mean to them.
Meaning of the word- semantic lexicon.
“rabbit”- animal, small, furry etc.
Semantic links of a word.
Phonological output lexicon.
The semantic information is matched with the appropriate word/phonological form.
Sounds are selected and sequenced.
Sometimes known as the phonological buffer.
Problem connecting semantic information with phonological output, so they know what it is but can’t think of the word.
Motor speech processes
The speech muscles are activated to produce the selected sequence of sounds for accurate pronunciation of the word.
Articulation :)
Problems e.g. dysarthria
What’s important to note about the PALPA?
These processes happen simultaneously rather than one after an other, with interactions between these processes.
What may aphasia involve?
Aphasia may involve dysfunction at more than one stage or between stages.
