low mood and depression are common in aphasia.
Visual Analog Mood Scales (VAMS) uses pictorial scale accessible to PwA
Stroke Aphasic Depression Questionnaire- family member/ caregiver fill this out, questions based on observable behaviours e.g. refusing to eat, disturbed sleep, crying etc.

Cognitive Linguistic Quick Test- 5 areas e.g. attention, memory.
The mini mental state examination- dementia screen.
Practice points for assessment.
Keep atmosphere relaxed.
Don’t assess for long period of time.
Give clear explanations and instructions at their level.
Encourage
Be sensitive to feelings and attitudes.
Performance on test shouldn’t be viewed in isolation- age, social and emotional state, attention and motivation etc.
Discuss findings and management options with PwA and family- involve them with decision making.
