- Rivers flooded and burst the banks

- Many suffered from malnutrition and lack of clean water
- 20 million people were effected (10% pop)
- 6 million needed food aid
- Villages were swept away
- 700,000 homes were destroyed
- 3 months after flood 7 million still had no shelter

- 500 miles of roads and railways were swept away with 1,000 bridges
- Needed road repair. electricity network

- About 6.5 million acres of crops were washed away in Punjab
- 160,00 km2 of land was affected (20% of country)

- Appeals were immediately launched by international organisation’s e.g. the UK’s disasters emergency committee helped
- Many charities and aid agency’s provided help -> Red crescent and medicine saints frontiers
- Government tried to raise money -> too slow -> Struggled to cope
- Foreign government donated millions ($), Saudi Arabia and USA promised $600 million in food aid
