Coastal management - Holderness coast Flashcards
1
Q
What engineering has been used in Bridlington (Holderness coast)
A
- 4.7km long seawall and wooden groynes
2
Q
What engineering has been used in Hornsea (Holderness coast)
A
- A seawall
- Wooden groynes
- Rock armour
Protect the village from erosion and flooding
3
Q
What engineering has been used in Withersea (Holderness coast)
A
- Groynes -> Create wider beaches
- Seawall, rock armour was placed in front after it was damaged in 1992
4
Q
What engineering has been used in Mappleton (Holderness coast)
A
- Two rock groynes (1991) Cost £2 million
Protect the village and a coastal road from erosion + flooding
5
Q
What engineering has been used in Spurn Head (Holderness coast)
A
- Groynes + rock armour
Protects the Humber Estuary behind Spurn Head
6
Q
What problems were caused because of the coastal management (Holderness coast)
A
- Groynes protect local areas -> cause narrow beaches further down (Cowden farm is at risk of falling into the sea)
- Rate of coastal retreat along the Lincolnshire coastline increased -> Because less material is being added
- Spurn head is at risk of being eroded away -> Less material is being added to it
- Material produced from erosion is normally transported south into the estuary -> Reduced material increases flooding (less material to slow water down)
