Painting and pottery styles Flashcards
Archaic Period:
Art began to move more to the realistic portrayal of figures.
From the Egyptians, Greeks learned to add hair down the back of marble statues to give strength to the neck area and spreading the stance of the legs to give it stability.
Male statues were called Kouros and female status Kore.
The Geometric period:
The repeating pattern circled the pot. Later, animals and people appeared.
They used pots for storing wine and oil. Even as burial markers.
Black figure Artists:
painted the figures in black silhouette with a slip made of clay and water.
Red figure:
Here the process was reversed. Figures were left in red against a black background and details were painted in black.
White ground vases:
A wash of white clay formed the background. Figures were then applied in black and additional colours were sometimes added after the firing.
Greek fresco:
is when someone paints a mural into wet plaster.

Pericles, leader of Athens, ordered to build the Parthenon on the Acropolis. It was dedicated to Athena, goddess of wisdom, warfare and courage.
