Why do we feel pain?

A

Prostaglandins are released from tissues surrounding the damaged area, causing inflammation, redness and swelling.

How does Paracetamol work?

A

It inhibits the production of prostaglandins in the brain.

It does not reduce inflammation or swelling

It is gentle on the stomach (compared to NSAIDS)

A

2 x 500mg tablets QDS

WARNING: Paracetamol can also be found in other otc products. Important to make sure there is not an overdose causing liver damage.

A

Day 1: 2 x 250mg tablets taken as soon as the pain begins, then a further 250mg tablet can be taken 6-8hrs later. (No more than 3 tablets in 24hrs)

Day 2 and 3: 1 x 250mg tablet every 8 hrs (No more than 3 tablets in 24hrs)
