Should be given lifestyle advice e.g. fibre, fluids, exercise

When to refer constipation?
Children Constipation with diarrhoea Blood or mucus in the stool If the constipation lasts longer than 2 weeks Unintentional weight loss Stomach pain
Treatment options for constipation?
- Lifestyle advice
- OTC
Stimulant laxatives e.g. bisacodyl, dulcolax, senokot, senna (quick 8-12 hours)
Take at night to have a result by the morning
Short-term use only
Bulk-forming laxatives e.g. fybogel, isphagula husk (longest 24-36 hours)
Should be taken with plenty of water.
Osmotic laxatives e.g. lactulose and macrogol, movicol.
Lactulose is gentle but can take up to three days to work
Faecal softeners e.g. docusate or glycerin suppositories
Symptoms of haemorrhoids?
Itching around anus Pain Bowels aren't completely empty Anal discharge Red blood after passing stools
How do anti-stringents work?
Form a protective layer over the affected area
