NSAID; mild to moderate pain relief in dogs and cats.
Side effects: gastric irritation
*cats can only be given very infrequently
Salicylic acid (Aspirin)
NSAID ; treatment of arthritic pain, post-surgical, etc. in dogs
SE: GI ulceration (rare); once believed to cause liver problems in Labrador Retrievers
Carprofen (Rimadyl, Vetprofen, Novox, etc.)
NSAID; treatment of post-operative pain and inflammation, osteoarthritic pain in dogs
SE: GI upset
Deracoxib (Deramaxx)
NSAID; control of pain and inflammation associated with arthritis in dogs
SE: GI upset
Firocoxib (Previcox)
NSAID; post-operative pain control, osteoarthritis, antipyretic for dogs and cats
SE: GI upset, especially at higher doses
*Caution: use in cats is limited to one-time SQ injection
*Up to 3 days orally
Meloxicam (Metacam, Loxicam)
NSAID; osteoarthritis pain relief in dogs (early onset)
SE: V/D, decreased appetite, lethargy
grapiprant (Galliprant)
NSAID; for post operative pain control in cats, acute pain due to musculoskeletal conditions
SE: can only give for 3 consecutive days; do not use in liver or kidney disease
Robenacoxib (Onsior)
NSAID ; lameness and arthritis in horses and dogs; analgesic for colic in horses
SE: GI ulcers and bleeding; bone marrow suppression
Phenylbutazone
NSAID; Equine colic and lameness pain, endotoxic shock; calf diarrhea; parvovirus
SE: swelling at injection site and sweating (horses); dogs- V/D, GI ulcers
Flunixin Meglumine (Banamine)
NSAID; varied; topical – reduces acute swelling from trauma in dogs horses, soft tissue trauma
SE: garlic taste, skin irritation, birth defects in some species
**Wear gloves when applying
Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO)
Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan
helpful in the management of arthritis
SE: none significant
*Can be used with other NSAIDs
Adequan
Chrodroprotective Agent; helpful in the management of arthritis
SE: none significant
Glucosamine/Chondroitin
* (Cosequin, Dasuquin, Glyco-flex)
Corticosteroids; potent anti-inflammatory, allergic reactions, immune suppression for autoimmune diseases, shock treatment, etc.
SE: PU, PD, polyphagia, muscle wasting, GI upset/ulceration, etc.
Prednisone/Prednisolone (cats)
Corticosteroids
