pain Flashcards
what factors can alter the experience of pain?
tiredness anxiety depression cold emotional changes divorces, bereavement etc.
how can pain be measured?
McGill pain index
wong baker rating scale
what conditions give rise to pain?
inflammation
trauma
necrosis
ischaemia
what substances produce pain?
potassium
sodium
chloride
calcium
what are the four phases of impulse conduction?
polarisation depolarisation action potential repolarisation resting
what occurs at polarisation?
no pain
potassium in cytoplasm
sodium outside
what occurs at depolarisation?
destruction of polarity
ionic exchange
sodium inside cytoplasm
potassium outside
what occurs at action potential?
change in membrane permeability
allows transference of ions
potassium exchanges with sodium
what happens at repolarisation?
achieved by sodium/potassium pump
reverts ions to polarised state
what occurs at resting?
no pain, as with polarisation
