Explain neuropathic pain
nerve pain
-burning, numbing, electric shock-like, shooting
Explain the types of somatic pain
Superficial: skin, mucous membranes, subcu. tissues- localized, burning, sharp
Deep: bones, tendons, muscle, fasciae- localized/diffusing, radiating, cramping
Explain visceral pain
Visceral/abdominal organs
-sharp, dull, deep, aching
What are some manifestations of acute pain?
Elevated HR, BP, RR
Confusion, agitation, anxiety
Diaphoresis, pallor
Urine retention
What are some manifestations of chronic pain?
Fatigue
Flat affect
Decrease physical activity
Social withdrawal
How long before pain is classified as chronic?
> 3 months
Explain the POSS Scale
Evaluates sedation levels in patients receiving opioids
Used prior to and after opioid administration
S, 1, 2, 3, 4
Explain the POSS Scale scores
S: sleep, easily aroused
-acceptable, may increase dose
1: Awake/alert, acceptable, may increase dose
2: Slightly drowsy, easily aroused, acceptable, may increase dose
3: Frequently drowsy/drifting, unacceptable, monitor RR, decrease dose
4: Somnolent, unacceptable, stop opioid, consider naloxone
