A
- Unpleasant feeling caused by intense or damaging stimuli
- Most common reason pt’s visit PT
- Chronic pain affects approx. 116 million Americans
- Affects more people than diabetes, heart disease, and cancer combined
- In the US the cost of pain is approx 600 billion per year

Definitions of Pain
A
- May include the perception, experience, and behavior of the individual
- Acute
- Persistent
- Chronic

Acute Pain
A
- Begins suddenly and sharp in quality
- In proportion to tissue damage and the potential for tissue damage

Persistent Pain
A
- Unresolved acute pain
- Called recurrent pain if repeating episodes of acute pain

Chronic Pain
A
- Persistent pain for more than a specific length of time
- 3 to 6 months
- Can directly affect a person’s well-being, psychosocial affects of life, and occurs with the absence of observed tissue injury or damage

Biopsychosocial Model of Pain
A
- If tissue damage is fixed the pain goes away (biomechanical model)
- Does not explain nonorganic pain-physiological source cannot be found (Psychogenic Pain)
- Biopsychosocial model attemps to explain the combination of physical and personal factors that cause pain
- Even in the absence of peripheral tissue damage that could be viewed as a psychological manifestation

Suffering - Affective Component of Pain
A
- Both emotional and cognitive
- Can be due to catastrophizing with feelings of anxiety and helplessness

Chronic Pain Syndrome
A
- CPS
- Any pain that persists longer than a reasonable healing time
- Individuals develop extensive pain behaviors (to the point of disease)
- Need to managed at times secondary to no cure
