Pain Flashcards
Pain mediating chemicals
- Substance P
- Histamines
- Prostaglandins
- Bradykinins
- Natural pain killers: seratonin, enkephalins, endorphins
How do serotonin, enkephalins, and endorphins inhibit pain reception?
They bind to opioid receptors in the brain and inhibit induction of pain impulses
Types of opioid receptors
Mu
Kappa
delta
Mu receptor
Stimulated by opioids and cause analgesia and resp depression, euphoria, and physical dependence
Kappa receptor
Stimulated by opioids to lesser extent than mu
causes analgesia, sedation, and psychotomimetic effects (mimic psychosis)
Delta receptor
No pharmacologic effects when stimulated
What hormone suppresses inflammation?
Cortisol
How do NSAIDs work?
They interfere with production of prostaglandins
Type of anti-inflammatory med
Glucocorticoids
Produce strong anti-inflammatory effect
Type of anti-inflammatory med
Uricosurics
Decrease serum levels of uric acid, which causes gout
