Pages 1-5 Test Chapters 1-2 Flashcards
Define Chemistry
The study of nature, its properties, its composition and how it undergoes changes
Name two sciences
Organic and Bio
Define Science
The effort to understand the history of the world and how it works
What is the difference between dependent and independent
Dependent Variable- The variable that is observed during an experiment, also called responding variable
Independent Variable- The variable that is changed during an experiment, also called manipulated variable
Definition of Law
Rule of conduct or action prescribed or formally recognized as binding or enforced by a controlling authority
Definition of Theory
The analysis of a set of fact in their relation to one another
Physical Change
A change in which some properties of a chemical change, but the composition of the material does not change
Chemical Change
A change that produces matter with a different composition than the original matter
Intensive (Boiling) Property
A property that depends on the type of matter in a sample, not the amount of matter
Extensive (Mass) Property
A property that depends on the amount of matter in a sample
What types can matter be divided into?
Substance and Mixture
Solid
Solid: Form of Volume that has definite shape and volume
Liquid:
Form of matter that flows, has a fixed volume and indefinite shape
Gas:
A form of matter that takes the shape and volume of its container, a gas has no definite shape or volume
Gas takes all shapes
Can Be Compressed
Law of Conservation of Matter
Matter can be neither created or destroyed
Water
Compound
