Page 1 Flashcards
The intermediate products of fat metabolism.
Ketone Bodies
Give me 3 Ketone bodies.
Acetone, acetoacetic acid and ß-hydroxybutyric acid
Why ketones do not appear on urine?
Fats undergo complete metabolism into CO2 + H2O, thus no ketone products.
When do ketone bodies appear?
Fat metabolism increase.
Ketone bodies conditions: (4)
Inability to metabolize carbs (DM)
Increased carb loss (Vomiting)
Inadequate carb intake (Weight loss, Starve)
Reaction for ketone bodies?
Nitroprusside Reaction
Nitroprusside reaction reactants + products?
Na nitroprusside + Acetoacetic acid -> Purple color
Nitroprusside rxn limitation
Does not measure ß-hydroxybutyric acid, only acetone
Nitroprusside reaction is used in these tests. What tests exactly?
Reagent Strip
Acetest
Legal’s Test
Rothera’s Test
Gerhardt’s Test
Hart’s Test
Gerhardt’s Test principle
FeCl3 + Acetoacetic acid -> red color
Hart’s Test principle
Acetone & acetoacetic acid removed via boiling, then:
ß-hydroxybutyric acid + hydrogen peroxide -> ???
