paeds- fluid calculations Flashcards
up to what date is a child considered a neonate
4 weeks
describe neonatal fluid resus
day 1- 60ml/kg
day 2- 90ml/ kg
day 3- 120 ml/kg
day 4- 150ml/kg
from day 4 up to 28 days- stay at 150ml/kg
divide by 24 to get hourly rate
how can you approximate weight in children?
(age + 4) x 2
what fluid is used in neonates?
10% glucose
what fluid is used in children?
0.9% NaCl + 5% glucose (+/- KCl)
describe the maintenance fluid calculation in children
first 10kg= 100ml/kg
from 10-20kg= 50ml/kg
any weight over 20kg= 20ml/kg
divide by 24 for hourly rate
if a child is not clinically dehydrated, what fluids will be given?
maintenance
if a child is clinically dehydrated, what is given?
maintenance + deficit (5%)
in a clinically dehydrated child, describe the calculation to get the fluid deficit
50ml/kg (5%)
if a child is clinically shocked, what is given?
maintenance + deficit (10%) + bolus
in a shocked child, describe the calculation for the fluid deficit
100ml/kg (10%)
when is a bolus given?
if shocked/ massive volume loss (haemorrhage etc)
describe the bolus calculation and fluid type
20ml/kg
0.9% NaCl
