what is the definition of conscious sedation?
use of drug(s) producing a state of depression of CNS allowing tx to be carried out but verbal contact with pt is maintained throughout period of sedation.
what are the 3 main key points during sedation for the pt?
- remains conscious
- retains protective reflexes
- understands and responds to verbal commands
what does MCDAS stand for?
Modified child dental anxiety scale
what are the types of paediatric sedation?
inhalation
intravenous
alternative techniques (oral & transmucosal)
what’s involved in inhalation sedation and what gases are used?
combination of pharmacology & behaviour management
Nitrous oxide + oxygen
when should you STOP/NOT give more inhalation sedation to a pt?
child reports tingling/starts giggling becomes over excited
STOP if ears ringing or sore head
how is IV sedation achieved and what drugs are used?
achieved by titration of appropriately selective sedative

- Propofol
