amblyopia
occurs when the visual systemic ignores the eye with the worst image
cortical development stops in the areas subserving the affected eye
parents may notice strabismus or objecting to occlusion of one eye
variable alignment is normal before
3 months
amblyopia treaatment
patching the good eye for a couple hours per day
pharmacological patching: using a drop of atropine in the good eye to cause blurriness
leukocoria causes
retinoblastoma
cataract, retinopathy of prematurity, trauma, congenital malformations
neonatal conjunctivitis
staph, strep
gonorrhea, chlamydia
HSV (may cause encephalitis)
gonorrhea will have copious white discharge
swab for MC&S and PCR
corneal light reflex
should be symmetric and slightly nasal
use a smaall toy or phone to get attention
bright torch or opthalmoscope
illuminate both eyes simultaneously
false squints
pseudostrabismus
have symmetrical corneal light reflex
